"One familiar with the Rain Crow knows that he is a real
bird who is more often heard than seen. He seems to not
really stop, but just pauses like a Road Runner. When one
hears him in the hot, dry summertime, it is a most welcome
song that rain is about to come," Stone said. The Phoenix Bird,
according to legend, appears once every hundred years,
consumes himself with his own fire, and rises to live again
from his own ashes. "The Rain Crow, with his power to predict
rain, and the Phoenix Bird are akin to one another. "I have
combined the two together in this wood sculpture to show
their relation to each other. It would be a tragedy if the
Phoenix should appear and not be able to burn himself up
because of the rain. The Rain Crow prevents this from
happening,” Stone said.
