Faith gives much insight into Willard's life. At thirteen he lost parts of two fingers and the thumb on his right hand in the accidental explosion of a dynamite cap. Until that time he had dreamed of being a painter "like the old masters whose pictures were in the school house, but the accident settled it. I couldn't hold a brush." The next few years were ones of turmoil and discouragement for the youth. Much later he said the accident "was a lucky break for me." He couldn't hold a paint brush, but he could shape clay with his crippled hand and that led him into carving wooden figures with an old pocket knife. "No matter what field of work man chooses for himself, he must have faith in himself and the Creator before he can excel in any chosen, I have used my own hands in this sculpture to try and get this point across." This piece was done in 1970.
